GRAPE FRUIT

「WAR IS OVER!」

I had to submit an article about Yoko Ono after coming back Tokyo. Therefore I read several documents about her in my hotel room during my stay in Paris, even the day after the terror attack. I was focusing on her exhibition “ Instruction Painting” at Sogetsu-Hall in 1962, and her book “Grape Fruit” published after the exhibition. The content of the exhibition at Sogetsu was that papers simple instructions were posted on the wall. After that, these instructions were made into a book. The content of instruction is for example as follow:

LIGHT PIECE
Carry an empty bag.
Go to the top of the hill.
Pour all the light you can in it.
Go home when it is dark.
Hang the bag in the middle of your
Room in place of a light bulb.
1963 autumn

After a few years, she has started the “ WAR IS OVER!” campaign with John Lennon. I think “WAR IS OVER!” is a kind of her instruction work for her.
I didn’t think of her works as “conceptual art” because her works seems to reflect her strong and fragile personality.

PAPERS: 1

The documentation of what I did in Paris.

PAPERS: 2

I wrote these articles to calm myself. My feelings were so confused at that time. These articles are not really readable texts. They look more like my raw feelings than a text.

NEWSPAPERS

The newspaper “ Le Mond” which got delivered to my hotel on the day after the terror attack. It seems to be only showing the raw and confusing feelings of the people.

FRAMED WORKS

The left one shows the front page of “ Le Mond.”
The right one shows Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “ Behind the Gare St. Lazare” included in the photo book “ Decisive moment.”
After coming back from my trip, I thought about the word “Decisive Moment” somehow, so I opened Bresson’s book. Eventually I found that this famous photo was taken at St. Lazare Station. St. Lazare Station was the subway station which I used everyday during my stay. And I found that the Bresson’s monumental book is titled “ Images à la sauvette ( a stolen image) ” originally in French, however the Japanese title is “Ketteiteki- shunkan ( Decisive Moment )” as a translation of the English title.
When I think of “Decisive Moment” I imagine capturing an important incident. And when I think of “a stolen image” I imagine capturing a passing scene, no matter if they are important or pretty things.
Today, I’m not so sure anymore what a photograph can really capture.

Daily life and the Constitution: 1

Daily life and the Constitution
I held an exhibition called “Daily life and the Constitution” which was connected to the magazine “ Haha-no-tomo(friends who are mothers.)” I gathered my experienced in Paris, my daily life and the Japanese Constitution. I thought it would be nice if the articles of the Japanese Constitution were like the lovely, childlike, and wise instructions which Yoko Ono posted on the wall in her exhibition. I wonder if we could live more consciously with the Japanese Constitution in our daily lives.

PARIS

A photo book titled “PARIS.”
A few months after my trip to Paris I edited one photo book titled “PARIS” which is designed like a sketchbook. I made just one piece by hand for the exhibition. It was composed of photos which I didn’t plan to make public, I took these photos randomly with my mobile phone, or a small digital camera. I put a blank paper in the middle of the photo book. The photos before the paper were taken before the terror attack, the later were taken after the terror attack. The next day of the terror attack, a state of emergency was declared in France, while the daily life continued in the same city. I was totally confused about that.

SNOW DOME

The shining Eiffel tower is enclosed inside the snow dome, which was a souvenir of my trip to Paris. It has already sat on my desk for a year. It became dusty and part of my everyday life in Tokyo. What did I bring from the trip?
